A few days before spring break I was waiting for Charlie to walk in the door from school, he was a few minutes late so I was just about to go check for him when I heard him sobbing coming through the garage door. It was a somethings really wrong sob so I knew it was bad. He came in with his arm limp to his side just balling. "What's wrong?!" I said. "I hurt my arm!" He sobbed. He held it up and I knew right away that it was broken. I had him sit down and was starting to get a little angry. "Charlie, it's broken!" I said pretty sternly. "What! It is!?" like it had never crossed his mind. I couldn't believe he did this again, almost exactly one year after the last, right before baseball season again and right before our trip to Vail for spring break where he was going to go snowboarding and swimming. These are all the thoughts rushing through my head, plus we don't have great insurance, we pay a lot out of pocket so I thought it was going to cost us a lot. See what a bad mom I am? I was not very sympathetic, for the above reasons and the fact that he did it doing something we have repeatedly told him not to do, swing on the neighbors hoop pretending to slam dunk it. I called Mark, who was having the same emotions I had just had, he was heading home because we were suppose to meet with his teachers for seop conference, or whatever they call it these days. By the time Mark got home we both had calmed down and just felt bad for him. He was obviously just as upset as we were that he did it. He's just going to be learning a lot of things the hard way I fear in his life.
He got a splint put on over the weekend, then on Monday we took him in to Dr. Hess where they willingly put a pink waterproof cast on for him so he could swim in Vail. He chose pink in remembrance of Gabe who's birthday it was that week. He was known for his pink vans so pink has sort of become a symbol of him.
We pulled him out of baseball and luckily were able to get him in soccer by the skin of our teeth so at least he'll have something to play. Any bets on when the next broken bone will be? :)
Oh and thankfully Mark signed us up for accident insurance when we switched policies. It was right after his last broken arm and he knew that with this kid in our family it'd come in handy. He was right!
